Title: Body symbolism and metaphors: how thoughts and words can affect physiology and movement patterns, and how to turn dysfunctional patterns into functional ones.

Presented by Monica Canducci

Webinar Description: The most recent discoveries in the field of neuroscience and embodied cognition show us that our brain reacts to metaphors involving body parts and movement by activating sensory-motor areas associated with motor perception, control, and planning. Moreover, even single nouns or verbs associated with motor actions or sensations are able to activate sensory-motor networks. The understanding of both the impact of words on our physiology and the symbolism of the human body (more specifically of body parts and their functions on a metaphorical level), can support us in helping our clients replace dysfunctional motor patterns with functional ones.

From the class, what you will get:

  • Fundamentals about how our brain reacts to metaphors and mental images involving body parts and movements
  • Basics of human body symbolism (body parts and functions, and some of their symbolic meanings)
  • Practical examples and suggestions about how to help a client understand the reason behind a dysfunctional movement pattern or habit
  • Practical examples and suggestions about how to help a client find alternatives, or turn dysfunctional patterns into functional ones
  • The value of word awareness and sensory-motor imagery in movement exploration applied to Structural Integration

Fees:

  • IASI Members: $25.00
  • Non-Members: $35.00
