Course Description:

Are you a graduate of one of the teaching schools that trace their lineage to the evolutionary vision of Ida Rolf? And are you drawn to pursuing an exploration of sitting meditation practices as part of your path of self-development? Meditating on The Line will present an approach to sitting meditation that is based on Dr. Rolf’s vision of the evolutionary potential of an embodiment of what she called The Line.

Dr. Rolf viewed The Line as a condition of a body whose structure was sufficiently integrated and balanced that it could let go of unnecessary bracing against the pull of gravity. In her vision this profound relaxation and letting go would stimulate what she called “evolutionary energies” resulting in a radical transformation of embodied consciousness. This understanding and approach is essentially what I’ve brought into the teaching I do in the Buddhist world, and the results have been revolutionary. The most common response from long-time meditators has been tears of profound gratitude (with some tears of anger as to “why, WHY wasn’t this shown to me twenty years ago?!”). Applying Dr. Rolf’s vision of The Line to the practice of sitting meditation radically catalyzes your time spent on the cushion, kneeling bench, or chair and takes you far faster and far deeper into the mystery revelations that lie at the core of body and mind.

In this experiential course we will address the following:

  • creating a seat that supports upright balancing
  • exploring the upright alignment of the torso
  • awakening the felt presence of the body through a gesture of profound relaxation
  • inviting resilient motion throughout the entire body in response to the breath that, in a truly relaxed body, wants to move through the body not unlike how a wave moves through a body of water
  • powerful breathing and relaxation techniques to help awaken your direct experience of The Line
  • examining the radical shift in embodied consciousness that occurs as a natural result of exploring the principles of The Line

We will meet for two-hour meditation sessions through Zoom for six consecutive Sundays: May 23, 30, June 6, 13, 20, 27. It’s ok if you need to miss a session as recordings will be emailed to all participants so you can continue to explore the meditation practices on your own.

Instructor Biography:

Will Johnson received his training in Structural Integration with Ida Rolf and Emmett Hutchins in 1975/76. He’s the author of fifteen books about the role of the body in spiritual practice including The Posture of Meditation, Breathing Through the Whole Body, and The Spiritual Practices of Rumi. He’s been in the forefront of revolutionizing Buddhism’s approach to sitting meditation practice and has taught a profoundly body-oriented approach to sitting practice based on Dr. Rolf’s vision of The Line at Buddhist retreat centers.
